L’immagine Ritrovata is an Italian state-of-the-art film restoration and conservation laboratory and part of the Cineteca di Bologna post production facility.

Since 1992 it has restored more than a hundred films in collaboration with different archives and institutions. The laboratory has acquired a range of equipment over the years to enable it to cater for a variety of restoration needs from classic to obsolete and non-standard formats.

A local producer and myself, the post production guy, ran into a very unusual Moire issue on a shot with a man wearing a moire susceptible sport coat and tie for an interview heavy production.

We had given up trying the usual suspects, Beauty Box, After Effects, fixing this error that only made itself terribly apparent once the shot was placed into an edit system environment.

The Civil War
is a landmark of American documentary filmmaking. Forty million people watched Ken Burns’ 11 hour documentary series when it first aired on PBS in 1990. Working under the direction of Burns and Restoration Producer Daniel J. White, Technicolor PostWorks New York recently hosted a 4K restoration that brought the project vividly back to life in preparation for the 25th anniversary rebroadcast of The Civil War on PBS and its Blu-ray release.

post-production company in Warsaw has re-constructed and digitally restored a classic film directed by Andrzej Wajda in 1965, titled ‘Popioly’, or ‘The Ashes’.

The project required not only patient, precise cleaning and colouring, but also editorial reconstruction to reveal once again its intended social and political message.
